Matthew, I've only read my assigned portion in-depth, but I've done a quick read through of the whole thing. We spent about 4 hours as a staff discussion our portion yesterday and found ourselves humbled, challenged and encourage in our ministry to our church body.

Shannon, Mark: yep, it's going on my short but growing list of books to read on a regularly rotating basis. I think next in line (along the same vein) is Dallas Willard's "Spirit of the Disciplines."

One of my all-time favorites...if you like this, you'll likely also enjoy "Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life" by Donald Whitney

This book kicks my butt every time. It's one of my favorite, least favorites for that very reason. I read this one about 5 years ago and took our young adult ministry through it one discipline at a time - it was brutal. Especially challenging for me are the disciplines of solitude and silence - it's so counter-cultural but so true. I believe it's a must-read for every believer every couple of years.

I'm not sure if you've read the entire thing or just your assigned section, but Foster's opening section about legalism and disciplines is also AMAZING!
