Such an interesting day yesterday. As a staff, the planning for the day was easy, but wrestling with the idea of whether or not we should do what we wanted to do was harder to deal with. In the end, things went off pretty much like we had planned, but you never know how trying something outside of people’s comfort zone is going to go off. (This is referring to the foot washing referenced in my previous post.)
As far as the morning goes, it was a pretty typical service. Musically, our rehearsal on Thursday was a little rough, and the Sun. AM sound check still left us feeling not quite prepared. As usual, we just left it and submitted ourselves to do the best we could and leave the rest to the Lord. We were pleased with the outcome, and I pray that He was as well.
Our iLife series had come to the discipline of Submission, not a real popular subject to say the least. Even though thematic musical planned was easier than last week on solitute, I was still unsettled throughout most of the week until I had one of those personal eureka moments. I decided to take a risk and do part of a song that had never been done before with our crowd. I’m obviously not against introducing new stuff to our congregation, but I usually try to do it in a more measured manner (ie. having it done by a soloist or choir first, intentionally teaching it over the course of a weeks, etc.). Thematically, it worked beautifully, and I hope the people were more intent on the words and meaning of the song than the fact that it might be new. Here’s the list:
- Trust and Obey // Sammis and Towner (traditional)
- Lord, Reign in Me // Brenton Brown
- Holiness // Scott Underwood
- I Surrender All // VanDeVenter and Weeden (semi-traditional style)
- The Stand (pre-chorus & chorus only) // Joel Houston (Hillsong United)
- I Surrender All (reprise chorus)
- From the Inside Out // Joel Houston (Hillsong United)
As you can see, there was a little Hillsong United vibe going on. The Stand was my “taking a risk” song, and I hope it was profitable in the hearts of our people.
Next Sunday we will introduce Saviour King.
