I was driving down the highway this morning, singing Crowder’s The Glory of It All at the top of my lungs, when I recalled a couple of similar yet disparate occasions in my past.
The first event was just a few months ago when my wife and I went to the House of Blues to see the DC*B. Other than being some of the oldest people in the room, it was a great experience. Standing just a few feet from the stage, just left of center, surrounded by hundreds of people singing at the top of their lungs.
Uninhibited souls without a care of what others around them thought about their antics. We all joined our voices together and truly made a joyful noise.
Then I remembered a time back in college when I went with some friends to a 4HIM concert. We were standing fairly close to the stage, just right of center, surrounded by a lot of other college students from the MANY ministerial schools in the area. There were also quite a few folks from many stages of life, from middle school to 40s-50s.
During the concert, I was the lone uninhibited soul in my general vicinity singing at the top of my lungs on every song. All the while, I suffered the stares of people all around me, and was told over and over by my friends to “chill out” and quit singing so loud.
I much prefer the former experience to the latter. If I can’t go to a concert and sing to the Lord with all I’ve got, I’d really rather not go. It’s not like we were seeing the local symphony and I was loudly humming along.
So, what’s your concert going style? Do you go to concerts and sing along, sometimes loudly, or do you go and just listen, soaking in the aural experience?
