The List

So today I’m trying to wrap up the song list for Sunday morning’s gathering. We’re at the end of our iLife series on the spiritual disciplines, and the final discipline is “celebration.” I’m going through my notebook of “active” songs trying to find the best fit for the feel and theme of the service.

I know that a great deal of you who read this blog are at churches that are much more contemporary in style than mine is currently. We are, as I’ve said many times, a church in transition. Ten years ago this church would have been solely considered a country church, but in the last five to six years the city has been growing out toward us. We are at the edge of a highway corridor that has seen explosive growth—along the lines of 2000%. So, the culture around us is changing, and our church is slowly changing with it. This is one of the reasons they hired me in the first place, to take their corporate worship style from barely blended to at the very least a more balanced offering.

After reading so many of the other blogs in my circle, I sometimes forget that I have been allowed to push the boundaries pretty hard. Maybe I’m not cutting edge like some of you, but I’m beginning to see I’ve taken some pretty big risks during my time here. Keep in mind that it really wasn’t all that many years ago that this church didn’t use a projector, and didn’t sing anything that wasn’t in the hymnal.

So, I thought I would compile a list of songs that I’ve introduced to this church in my time here. There are some obvious ones that will be missing, lots of stuff that they were already experimenting with when I came (Above All, Breathe, etc.), so if a song isn’t on the list it doesn’t mean we don’t do it, just that it wasn’t me who introduced it.

Our church is a contemporary church (Palm Harbor Community Church) but ya know what, I recognize some of these songs as we have done them. Especially “Better Is One Day” and “Unfailing Love”.
