Worship Confessional: June 22, 2008

Yesterday was the start of VBS, so the entire platform was all decorated with Hawaiian decor, and many of us were wearing Hawaiian shirts and such. One of the cool benefits of the setting was the lack of pulpit (yes, we still have a pulpit). I’m going to be really honest here, no offence to anyone, but I think a pulpit is barrier to communication. I was glad to see it gone.

During our second half of the music, I did something very different for us (while not radical in the slightest for some of you readers). I “invited” the people to enact whatever posture they wished. What a difference. Probably about 60% of the folks stood, while others came to the altar, and there was more hand raising than I’ve seen in a long time. It was good and refreshing.

Again, with the pulpit gone, our pastor (in full Rick Warren-esque attire) grabbed once of our band’s stools and sat down to preach. What a difference! It was like a conversation rather than a sermon. I heard many, many positive comments to that effect, and I hope we can somehow convince him to make it a regular habit.

Here’s the set list:

  • All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name // traditional
  • Indescribable // Laura Story (Tomlin)
  • Holy is the Lord // Chris Tomlin
  • We Will Glorify // traditional
  • Holy, Holy, Holy // traditional
  • All Hail King Jesus
